• Star Anise is the fruit of the Chinese evergreen tree Illicium verum. They are 1-inch, deep brown star-shaped pods with six to eight points which each contain a seed. While the names are similar Star Anise and Anise seeds are unrelated. Star Anise has a mild and fragrant licorice flavor with sweet and herbal undertones.
  
• Star anise is most commonly used in Chinese and Vietnamese cuisines and can be seen in Chinese 5 Spice and in Vietnamese pho. Whole star anise is most often used to impart flavor in braised dishes, soups, and stews and is removed at the end of cooking, similar to how whole bay leaves are used. Whole Star Anise can be brewed into a tea or added to a brewing pot of coffee for flavor. Alternatively, the pods could be ground and used in baked goods.
